What Are Maps?

What are Maps? A simple definition of a map would be "maps provide spatial information". Most people understand maps, by understanding the different sorts of maps that exist.

Some of these are:
  • Topographic Maps show topography (landform) and by tradition, other features such as roads, railway, boundaries etc.
  • Thematic Maps show one theme or subject. They often form a part of a report.

  • Scientific Maps are usually thematic maps but have a specialist nature, for example map showing geological information or weather.
